| Sanchez helps Giants blank Angels 4-0 | |
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Jonathan Sanchez is not quite ready for the season. Could have fooled the Los Angeles Angels. Sanchez gave up only one hit in six innings to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 4-0 victory over the Angels on Thursday night. “I am not 100 percent yet, but I am almost there,” Sanchez said. Sanchez only gave up Chris Pettit’s sharp grounder off the glove of shortstop Miguel Tejada in the first inning. The left-hander struck out five, walked one and hit a batter with a pitch. Pablo Sandoval and Pat Burrell each had a run-scoring double in San Francisco’s three-run fourth against Dan Haren. Haren pitched another inning and went five in all, giving up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. “I’m getting there, still some work to do,” Haren said. “I still have two more outings and I’m sure by then I’ll definitely be ready to go. I got up with a few pitches, just kind of got out of my rhythm there for a little bit. I left a few pitches up out over the plate, especially the one to Tejada. “It’s pretty simple, you get behind in the count, leave balls up, you’re going to get hit.” Angels manager Mike Scioscia wasn’t concerned. “The stuff is really coming together,” he said. Giants closer Brian Wilson, wearing green St. Patrick’s Day spikes, pitched a scoreless seventh inning, walking one batter. NOTES: Freddy Sanchez drove in Torres with a single in the eighth inning. … Giants RHP Matt Cain is scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Friday at the Giants’ minor-league facility. … Giants manager Bruce Bochy plans to rest a lot of his regulars, many who played Thursday, for Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. … Angels OF Torii Hunter was sent home from the team workout Thursday due to illness. | Angels ace Weaver loses arbitration case
Trio of arbitrators sides with team’s request of $7.4M USLast Updated: Thursday, February 10, 2011 | 1:12 PM ETThe Associated PressThe Los Angeles Angels have defeated pitcher Jered Weaver in salary arbitration. The pitcher will get a raise from $4,265,000 US to $7,365,000 instead of his request for $8.8 million. Arbitrators Margaret Brogan, James Oldham and Robert Herzog made the decision Thursday, a day after hearing arguments. The 28-year-old right-hander was 13-12 with a 3.01 ERA in 34 starts for the Angels last season and led the major leagues with 233 strikeouts. His record was down from 16-8 in 2009, but his ERA improved from 3.75. Players and owners have split the two decisions thus far this winter. Pittsburgh pitcher Ross Ohlendorf won Wednesday despite going 1-11 last season. Ten players remain in arbitration, with hearings scheduled through Feb. 18. That’s all the news for today. | Takahashi agrees to 2-year deal with Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Los Angeles Angels bolstered their bullpen Thursday, agreeing to a two-year deal with Japanese left-hander Hisanori Takahashi. Takahashi appeared in 53 games this year with the New York Mets in his first season in the majors. He went 10-6 with eight saves and a 3.61 ERA.
The 35-year-old Takahashi made 12 starts and became the first Mets pitcher since Roger McDowell in 1986 to record double digits in victories and eight or more saves in the same season. “We believe that his contributions in various roles in our bullpen will be extremely important to the overall success of our club,” Angels general manager Tony Reagins said in a release. Takahashi agreed to a minor league deal with the Mets in February after 10 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan’s Central League. Also Thursday, the Angels did not tender a contract to infielder Kevin Frandsen, making him a free agent. Frandsen batted .250 with 14 RBIs in 54 games with Los Angeles last season. — The Associated Press
