Mark Kolbe/Getty Images
More plaudits for Landon Donovan Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan continues to add to his mystique and legacy. Just recently, SBNation Los Angeles named the Galaxy’s 3-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders on July 4 the Game of the Year. Donovan managed an assist in the game, while team Golden Boot winner Edson Buddle added one of his 17 goals and Juninho added a brace.
Other games highlighted include the Sep. 11 victory over the Columbus Crew (3-1), the Oct. 24 Shield-clinching victory over FC Dallas (2-1) and the 2-2 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes on Jul. 22. USA vs. Algeria remembered on ESPN On ESPN Los Angeles, Donovan’s 91st minute winner for the USA in a 2010 FIFA World Cup game against Algeria has made him a candidate for L.A. Athlete of the Year.Â
Others up for contention include Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jared Weaver, Los Angeles Sparks forward Tina Thompson, USC Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley and Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin. David Beckham to the Spurs? There are six Premier League teams looking to get midfielder David Beckham’s services on loan, and Tottenham is one of them. The Galaxy released a statement earlier this month saying there were no plans to release Beckham following growing speculation that he would be allowed to return to Europe. However, Beckham is in talks with the club to allow him leave on a two-month loan during the offseason. Others in the hunt include Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United, Sunderland, Everton and Newcastle United, as well as clubs from Italy and Spain. This article is

| Best Angels photos of 2010 | |
The saying goes “a picture is worth a thousand words.” In 2010, an Angels photo usually was worth one – “Ugh.” Whether it was a grimace after a strikeout, a pitcher with his head hanging just above the dirt or a star first baseman stunned that his season just ended after a walk-off grand slam, the year provided plenty of gut-wrenching moments. But it wasn’t all bad. There were star-making performances by guys like Jered Weaver, a big-time midseason trade, a successful All-Star Game and the debuts of some promising talent. | LA resident wonders where building’s angels went | |
LOS ANGELES — The population of winged guardians in the City of Angels is not what it was. A downtown Los Angeles resident wants to find out what happened to dozens of terra-cotta angel sculptures that once adorned a landmark downtown building that was demolished in 1969. The Richfield Building, a black, art-deco tower, which was built in 1929 and served as the headquarters for Richfield Oil, was festooned with 40 golden angels wearing roman helmets and breastplates. The 10-foot-tall majestic sentries gazed down on the city from the 12-floor building. When the tower was pulled down to make way for a generic-looking high-rise complex, the angels were removed and offered for sale for $100 and one of them was bought by an Orange County family. Local historian and urban anthropologist Eric Lynxwiler heard the family was selling the sculpture, so he bought it for $2,500 and attempted to bring it back to his downtown loft in a truck. “I ended up hiring a crane and a forklift,” Lynxwiler told the Los Angeles Times. “The crane operator weighed it and found it was 1½ tons, so I had to have a special base made to hold it. Altogether, it ended up costing $10,000.” Lynxwiler, 37, wants to know what happened to the other angels. He speculates that some could have ended up amidst the rubble from the demolished building that was used to construct Los Angeles-area freeways. A pair of ornate elevator doors from the Richfield Building were saved and incorporated into one of the high-rise towers now standing on the site. The University of California, Santa Barbara, has four of the old building’s front door ornaments. Leave your comments on the news below. Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off
